If you haven’t had a chance to explore Crissy Field recently, you may have missed one of the best outdoor art exhibits in the city. Mark di Suvero at Crissy Field is presented by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art SFMOMA in partnership with the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and showcases eight of diSuvero’s large-scale steel sculptures which draw inspiration from the Golden Gate Bridge.
At the age of seven, artist Mark di Suvero immigrated from China to the United States, passing under the Golden Gate Bridge on his travels to his new home. The massive orange arches curving overhead made quite an impression on him at this young age; said the artist of that day: "It was like a rainbow, a bridge coming to the New World starting a new life.” As a teenager, the artist was taught how to work in wood by the same woman who picked the color of the bridge. This “connection” to the iconic structure can be seen in current sculptural exhibit — dynamic sculptures spanning up to 50 feet high and 40 feet wide – how the color and scale of the bridge have inspired him.
Tours. There are a few ways to tour and learn more about the exhibit. Take a SFMOMA docent-led tour on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays at 10:30am, weather permitting.
