One of the wonderful things about living at Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square is the fact that it is within easy walking distance to a number of local venues great for a family outing.  One such landmark is Coit Tower. A slender white concrete column rising from the top of Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower has been an integral and recognizable feature of San Francisco’s skyline since its completion in 1933.  Its observation deck can be reached by elevator (requires the purchase of a ticket) and provides amazing 360-degree views of the city and bay, including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.

Colorful History.  The iconic tower is named for Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy eccentric and patron of the city’s firefighters. Joining Knickerboker Engine Company No. 5 at the age of 15, Lillie Coit later married and traveled the world, becoming known for her travels and exploits; she was a true pioneering spirit.  She died in 1929, leaving a substantial bequest “for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city I have always loved.” The funds were used to build both the tower, designed by the firm of Arthur Brown, Jr., architect of San Francisco’s City Hall, and a monument to Coit’s beloved volunteer firefighters, in nearby Washington Square.

Mural Tours.  Coit Tower has its history, and it definitely has the views, some of which are inside the tower itself. The murals inside the tower’s base were painted in 1934 by a group of artists employed by the Public Works of Art Project and depict life in California during the Great Depression. There was some controversy regarding the subject matter of some murals, and for a brief time, access to the murals was restricted while they were repainted.  Having fallen victim to time and the elements, the Coit Tower murals have undergone extensive restoration.

The murals are scheduled to reopen to the public in May/June 2014.  For more information regarding Coit Tower and Mural tours, visit their official page here.
